Defying Aging: Maintaining Strength and Independence Through Exercise
In the heart of Union Square, NYC, where a vibrant lifestyle meets the inevitability of aging, the question of maintaining strength and independence looms large.
Aging has long been synonymous with becoming weak and an increased risk of falling. Studies in this field would lead you to believe that this is a fact of life, however, these studies only focus on sedentary aging adults. The real question is, is the weakness that comes with aging due to aging or due to chronic dis-use caused by a sedentary lifestyle? Thankfully, a study by Wroblewski, et al. set out to answer this exact question.
The Study: Defying Aging Through Exercise
This study looked at 40 aging athletes who competed in sports such as running, biking, and swimming. The ages of the participants ranged from 40-81 years and they exercised 4-5 times a week. The study examined the participants body composition, muscle strength, and took an MRI of their upper leg muscles.
The most incredible finding was that strength did not decline with age and muscle mass was nearly unchanged in the older population; just take a look at the incredible images of the thigh muscles below. The 40 & 70 year old athlete’s MRIs look identical!
What Does This Mean for Union Square Residents?
This study is proof that weakness as you age, has very little to do with age at all.
But don’t worry! On the off chance that you aren’t an 80 year old triathlete, there’s still hope!
