Defying Aging: Maintaining Strength and Independence Through Exercise
There is a common misconception that aging causes weakness. Many studies in this field appear to support this claim; however, they often focus only on sedentary older adults. The real question is: does the weakness associated with aging result from the aging process itself, or from chronic disuse caused by a sedentary lifestyle? A study by Wroblewski, et al. set out to answer this exact question.
The Study: Defying Aging Through Exercise
This study looked at 40 aging athletes who competed in sports such as running, biking, and swimming. The ages of the participants ranged from 40-81 years and they exercised 4-5 times a week. The study examined the participants body composition, muscle strength, and took an MRI of their upper leg muscles.
The most incredible finding was that strength did not decline with age and muscle mass was nearly unchanged in the older population; just take a look at the incredible images of the thigh muscles below. The 40 & 70 year old athlete’s MRIs look identical!
